While Australia operates trains on three different railway gauges across the country, narrow (or 3'6''), standard (4'8½"), or broad gauge (5'3"), there is one thing they all have in common - trackwork.

The degree at which trackwork is done as almost as varied as the rail gauges. Some cities, such as Sydney, conduct trackwork almost on a daily basis, and have shutdowns on most weekends of the year. In addition, even larger shutdowns can occur over the school vacation period. Most other cities perform trackwork periodically on weekends (Brisbane, Melbourne, and Perth). Cities, such as Adelaide, see only the occasional large project, such as the Islington track resleepering, and the Bakewell Underpass project, with little general track maintenance performed.

Whilst trackwork does cause a level of inconvenience to the travelling public, it provides the transport enthusiast with the opportunity to see and hear unusual activities.
