Suburban and intercity trains in New Zealand are run by two separate companies. Toll NZ operate TranzMetro suburban and interurban services operating out of Wellington to the suburbs and Masterton. They also operate TranzScenic services from Wellington to Palmerston North and Auckland, and on the South Island from Christchurch to Picton and Greymouth. Veolia Transport operate Auckland suburban rail services on behalf of the Auckland Regional Council.
All country and suburban services run daily, with the exception of Auckland suburban services between New Lynn and Waitakere, which run Mondays to Saturdays, and the Palmerston North 'Capital Connection' which runs on Mondays to Fridays only.
Announcements can generally only be found at two stations in New Zealand - Wellington and Christchurch. Both TranzMetro and TranzScenic announcements play at set times before each departure from Wellington station, while at Christchurch they play regularly up to thirty minutes prior to the departure of each of its two daily trains.
